Geographical Indications (GIs)

Geographical Indications (GIs)

Geographical Indications (GIs) relate to where something is made. It is a sign of authenticity and quality.

It is used by producers of specific products to link their product to the reputation of the place that the products are from.

A GI applicant must state what makes that type of product from that region different, such as a unique combination of climate and soil. e.g. Champagne from the Champagne region of France.

GIs can only be used for the products they are registered for if the products are manufactured in that place.

We can assist with advice and applications for GIs in New Zealand and Australia.
